Colorado family lawyers from Cantafio & Song PLLC attended Denver's 2013 PrideFest this past weekend to show their support for local residents of the LGBT community and to spread the word on civil unions. Denver PrideFest – which was held on Saturday June 15 and Sunday June 16 – is one of the top ten pride events in the United States. An event that celebrates community, heritage, family, and culture, the Denver PrideFest draws more than 250,000 people from across Colorado and many of the surrounding areas.
At Cantafio & Song PLLC we are tremendously proud of the trust local residents and communities place in our firm during their times of legal need, and we always strive to return the favor by showing our support. Our Colorado family law team was stationed at the corner of 14th and Broadway during the event, taking part in the festivities and helping members of the LGBT community better understand their legal rights when it comes to family law.
Advocates for equal rights have spent years petitioning for legislation that would address the rights of same-sex couples in Colorado and throughout the entire Country. In 2011, the Colorado Civil Union Act was introduced, and in March of this year, was finally signed into law. The Civil Union Act – which took effect on May 1, 2013 – allows any two unmarried adults, regardless of gender, to enter into a civil union. Colorado is the sixth U.S. state to legalize civil unions, joining Rhode Island, New Jersey, Illinois, Hawaii, and Delaware.
Under the Civil Union Act, partners in a civil union in Colorado are entitled to the same legal rights, benefits, and protections as heterosexual spouses in a marriage. Although many still push for legalization of same-sex marriage – as nine U.S. states have already done so – local residents can take comfort in the fact that with the passing of the Colorado Civil Union Act, amazing progress has been made.
As same-sex couples face a number of unique legal barriers, and as the Colorado Civil Union Act is still new and difficult for many to fully understand, our family attorneys at Cantafio & Song PLLC are committed to providing personalized, compassionate, and experienced legal assistance to same-sex couples throughout the state. Our attorneys – who always remain up to date about the latest legislative acts and efforts – take the time to fully educate our clients about their rights and legal options. We guide clients through their unique legal journeys step by step and go above and beyond in our efforts to provide them with the information, earnest support, and comprehensive legal aid they need to navigate their chosen endeavor.
