John Schum focuses his practice in the areas of Marijuana and Cannabis Law and courtroom litigation. Since being admitted to the California Bar in 1992 and the Hawaii Bar in 2006, he has honed his skills to be a tenacious litigator who places the clients’ best interests at the forefront. His knowledge and experience have been instrumental in obtaining superior results for his clients. He has applied his advocacy skills and work ethic to the emerging area of Marijuana Law ensuring that all the firm’s clients are properly structured and compliant with the rules and regulations in the industry.
Mr. Schum was a former infantry officer, federal prosecutor, defense counsel and military judge in the United States Marine Corps. He retired in 2006 as Lieutenant Colonel after serving 22 years on active duty. He immediately went into private practice in Honolulu, Hawaii handling predominantly serious violent felony and drug charges in State, Federal and Military Courts-Martial before all branches of the Armed Forces. Over the past 11 years he has tried more than 100 jury trials involving murder, armed robbery, sexual assaults, drug distribution cases and other criminal matters.
Mr. Schum’s work in the highly complex and regulated Marijuana Law field seeks to protect businesses and entrepreneurs that are looking to enter and thrive in the medical and recreational use industry. His primary concern is to ensure our clients are 100% compliant with all rules and regulations in the industry. Whenever he takes on a new client, he familiarizes himself with the client’s unique objectives and is passionate about making sure their specific needs are met. Mr. Schum is part of the firm’s team of Marijuana and Cannabis Law Attorneys that are relentless in providing the firm’s clients with the highest-quality representation possible.
Through his study and work in the field, Mr. Schum is considered one of the Marijuana Law experts in the State of Hawaii. He is a faculty member for the National Business Institute and lectures on marijuana laws covering the topics of Federal Responses, Marijuana Business Laws and Obtaining a Cannabis Business License.
Mr. Schum received his Juris Doctorate degree from California Western School of Law and his Masters of Law from the University of Virginia - The Judge Advocate General’s School United States Army. He is admitted to practice law in California and Hawaii, the United States District Court, District of Hawaii, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of the United States of America.
