Costs of Raising a Child

By James S. Margulis, Esq.

http://www.9news.com/news/article/350296/188/Cost-to-raise-a-child-rises-23-percent-since-1960

As set forth in this article, it should come as no surprise that the costs of raising children is ever increasing.

Obviously, a divorce situation makes those increasing costs even more painful.

While child care and health insurance are factors that are computed in the Colorado Child Support Calculation Worksheets, many other expenses are not contemplated in said calculation.

Typically, there are separate provisions addressing uncovered medical expenses and agreed upon extracurricular activity expenses. And typically, these expenses are split equally. The critical issue is that these expenses are often vague and unexpected. Further, Judges do not consider these vague and unexpected expenses when determining maintenance and child support.

Thus, a payor spouse may be paying maintenance and child support, and then also be required to also pay these further children expenses. It can be absolutely overwhelming and literally unmanageable.

You must protect yourself financially and make sure you are taking the necessary steps to serve the long-term best interests of your children.

It is critical to have superb representation to address such matters in the process of your divorce case.

Please contact the Domestic Team at Feldmann & Nagel, LLC to address such matters and to serve all of your family law needs.
